Students at a primary school in the Northern Territory have been using horses and dogs to learn about exercise physiology. A local veterinarian in Katherine took the animals to Clyde Fenton school yesterday as part of the CSIRO's Scientists in Schools program.

Year Six student Justin Holt says he was responsible for running one of the dogs to get its heart rate to increase.

"It was pretty hard to find where the dog breathes, because all you can feel is the heart-rate when you're trying to feel where he breathes," he says.

"So it was pretty hard to do that but I managed to do it."
