A Word on Nutrition

I am continually amazed that people of our generation have no idea of what to eat or having an understanding of what foods can increase metabolism. It is no wonder that obese children are now "normal" and the skinny kids are "weird." I am going to share with you the "7 Secrets" to Good Food & Nutrition that will blow away every diet ever conceived:

  1. When thinking of food, please remember it does not come in packaging. There are no trees with plastic wrap around the fruit to keep it fresh or bushes growing dried bits of something in a box. My daughter (she is 4) and I started an ambitious project whereby we are growing all the food we eat. If we can not grow it, we do not eat it. There are a few reasons this may not be practical for everyone but if you are able to do so, try it.
  2. Lolo Houbein wrote a book, One Magic Square: Grow Your Own Food in One Square Metre. I recommend it and it is specific to Australian geography. Even if you do not have 1 sm of space, you can grow something in a pot. Doing so will give you a greater appreciation for where your food comes from and what you are putting in your mouth.
  3. If you do "have to" consume something that is packaged, ensure you are familiar with and can read all of the ingredients. If there is something listed which you can not pronouce, it is not recommened that you consume it.
  4. Have a small meal every 2 hours. This is not a challenge. It requires that you be responsible for your own life and do a little planning about what will go into your body. A small meal can be as simple as an apple or 8 almonds. Keeping your digestive system going with real food increases metabolism over time when combined with regular exercise. Additionally, your body is 90% water, not 90% coffee, 90% soft drinks, 90% cordial or 90% alcohol. Consume at least 2 - 3 litres of water per day. If must have the other stuff, have it after you have had all of your water for the day.
  5. Think about your car. If you never gave it oil or urinated in the petrol tank instead of putting in petrol, you would not be surprised when it stopped working. Should you be surprised when you eat "crap" (Yes, McDonalds and all other fast food establishment offerings are included in the CRAP category) and feel depressed, sluggish or otherwise not at 100%?
  6. You can eat all the healthy food you want and have the best nutrition balance you want but if you do not incorporate exercise it is useless. What is also useless to your wellness is if you do not cultivate amazing relationships and support structures in your life. Those who have great friends, laugh a lot, spend time with nature and cultivate relationships, live 33% longer WITH excellent quality of life compared to those who do not.
  7. The final "Secret" to nutrition is that if you have done everything you can to only consume things that are fresh, are a single ingredient and you share with others, the final test is, Are you proud of what you have put in your body today? More to the point, are you proud of what you have planned to put in your body and then delivered on?

Even with all of these things adhered to, sometimes the body fat still will not come off. Sometimes there is something else persisting. That is when it is useful to engage an expert to review what is happening from an impartial perspective as to what you could be holding on to or needing to be released.
